When Kathy LaTour departed this world on June 19th, she left behind legions of people whose lives are better because of her—including many who never heard of her. She also left behind words of wisdom in books, articles and a yellowed piece of paper. One friend generously shared “Kathy’s Suggestions for Life,” having found the 30-year-old piece of paper while unpacking from a move and then marveling at the timeliness of Kathy’s advice. A select few:
#6. Believe in something. Commit to it and work for it.
#9 Don’t be afraid to make mistakes. Life is a process of elimination. Making mistakes helps you learn what is right for you.
#13. Get to know people who do not place value on external wealth, but offer instead an internal wealth of spirit, heart and soul. Make a place for them in your life and learn from them.
I met Kathy at the 1992 Summit of the National Coalition for Cancer Survivorship. I watched her fearlessly and tirelessly overcome obstacles to making the world better for other cancer survivors. Sometimes it was through a public-works project like Dallas’ Bridge Breast Network Other times it was by helping one-on-one with a meal, a shoulder to cry on, or a gift of books. One time Kathy offered to adopt the baby of a single Mom , if the need arose, assuaging the young woman’s debilitating fear of dying and leaving the child to foster care. They weren’t just words. Kathy meant it.
Over the years, I told Kathy repeatedly how much I admired her passion to make the world better for others—and her remarkable ability to follow through. Read about some of her achievements in this tribute in CURE Today magazine. May Kathy’s memory be a blessing. RIP, my friend.
