Emotions can keep you from getting good care. To help you win the battle of the emotions, tap into the power of healing hope.
Desire. Fear. Anger. Sadness. Those are just a few of the emotions that lead otherwise reasonable people to miss opportunities for healing, such as by eating an unhealthy diet, delaying reporting worrisome symptoms, and skipping screening tests or follow-up visits.
Consider fighting fire with fire, using healing emotions to overpower those emotions that are hampering Healthy Survivorship. Hope—a feeling linked to a belief the desired outcome can happen—can stir the courage, motivation, fortitude or whatever else is needed to overcome the obstacles and do what you know to be the right thing.
For example, imagine you’re hesitating to report a worrisome symptom. Maybe you’re afraid of getting bad news or embarrassed about having skipped your medications. Maybe you don’t want your loved ones worrying.
[from the free eBook Finding Hope That Heals] To overcome obstacles to proper action, you need hope…. Maybe it’s hope to…
Catch problems early, when many are most treatable.
Avoid regret that you waited too long.
Do what your loved ones want you to do.
Be a role model for your children, friends or family.
Do the “right” thing.
It matters less what you feel than what you do with what you feel. When emotions threaten to lead you astray, focus on those hope(s) that keep you on a path of healing.
